The Apostle Edna Hathaway Lawrence
LEADER - PASTOR - ARTIST - TEACHER
Apostle Edna Hathaway Lawrence is a powerful woman of God who with grace, commitment and passion serves as the Founding Pastor of Good Works Community Church, Hertford, North Carolina. She is a dedicated leader-servant of a body of believers on fire for God!
With humble beginnings in Edenton, North Carolina, Apostle Lawrence grew up as a pastor’s daughter in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Her father, the late Reverend Anthony Hathaway, Sr. and mother, Etta, provided a loving and stable home for Apostle Lawrence and her five siblings to develop character, stewardship and a lifelong journey of excellence in community service and faith. Their parents’ modeling of Christian living and successful careers in insurance and school food service broadened the horizon for their children to become leaders in the fields of education, law enforcement, nursing, science, and business. Family unity and unfailing faith intertwined a framework for witnessing the powerful impact of the bible on family success.
After high school, Apostle Lawrence attended Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, North Carolina. While there, she studied art education, and was duly elected president of the Women’s Government and Student Government Associations. For her leadership, she received numerous awards, such as Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. After graduating in 1974, she worked for 20 plus years as an art educator in public education.
Apostle Lawrence loved teaching students at every level. The art classroom provided her opportunities to help each and every student recognize and strive toward reaching his and her fullest potential. Her creativity blended with motivating student awareness was the springboard she used to launch student success. In 1981, she received a master’s degree in Human Resources Development, from The George Washington University, Washington, DC.
For ten years, she was the training and development professional for the Newport News, Virginia Office of Human Affairs, teaching employability skills and the City of Norfolk, Virginia, Department of Personnel, teaching workshops and managing the city wide, employee development training program. Retired from public service since, 2014, she continues to teach from the pulpit, using a unique teaching style flavored with much love, wisdom and authenticity.
In 1990, following in her father’s footsteps, Apostle Lawrence began ministering in the AME Zion Church. For two decades, she provided pastoral leadership for ten churches. In 2010, she left the denomination. A few weeks later, she planted a new ministry called, Good Works Community Church. The ministry grew and within three years she received apostolic consecration to lead as an “Apostle.” Whether in the pulpit or classroom, Apostle Lawrence’s life has been spent helping others discover a flicker of hope within, to tap into their God-given potential, to grow and transform talents into meaningful careers and abundant lifestyles, acceptable to man and God.
She has been happily married for 43 years to Deacon Calvin Leroy Lawrence, Sr., Retired Master Chief Petty Officer, United States Navy. He has been a “high tower in low valleys and a strong bridge over troubled waters.” They are the proud parents of two sons, Calvin Jr. and Adrian, and their wives, Marty and Michelle, and four grandchildren, Adriana, Briseis, Wyatt and Charis.
